Torture was explicitly outlawed by the United Nations with the adoption of the Convention Against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment. The Convention was adopted by the UN General Assembly on December 10, 1984, and it came into force on June 26, 1987.
